L1 Extension - Years of Stay

Got my L1 Blanket approved in Oct 2007 - worked in US for a month , project was scraped and had to go back to base location - Travelled to US again in 2009 and have been here for 1 year ! I am now applying for extension ! I am aware that the maximum period you can stay on L1 Blanket is 5 years ( 3+2 )

Question : My peers say period is calculated with number of days stayed / spent in US - I have worked or stayed in US for 1 year in total out of all my 3 years visa ( 2007 - 2010 ) - Considering the best case of Visa extension approval how many years extension i can expect ? 2 years max or another 3 years +

5 years minus whatever time that is already spent in U.S under H1B + L1 status.
