Default Need Visa for Brazil Resident to Transit Through US to Canada?

Hi there, I have a question regarding visas needed to transit INSIDE airport during a flight from Sao Paulo, BR to Montreal, QC, Canada. As I read it on your website, the C-1 Visa is needed for non-US residents (Brazil included) when transiting through US to another final destination. I also saw that if the transit duration is short, and you don't need to go out of the airport during this time, you don't need to ask for the visa, as I guess you don't need to pass the US borders at all.

I've already done the procedures to get my Canadian visa, as I'm going to stay there 1 week. But should I have asked for the US visa too even if I'm only going to be transiting there? (Maybe 2-3 hours duration or less) If so, what kind of visa should I get and how much time does it take to be processed?

    Thank you
