    Default Citizenship/German Citizen Also

    Dear Sir or Madame,

I like your website. I a green card holder since 95 and am getting ready to file my citizenship this year.

As I am German, I would like to ad, that since 2002 it is possible for Germans to have dual citizenship, if an application is filed to the German government and it is approved by the same.

I know it well, as I got the certificate from the German government, to keep my German citizenship while having the US citizenship.
Thought I will send that to you . There is alot of cases around us who try to get it.

Again, this is not a right!, but a a privilege given by the German government after receiving an application. Also it costs about 300 Euros or so.

    Thank you very much,

If the German government has no problem with it, US government has no problem with it either.

I just went through this process myself. In order to retain your German citizenship you have to apply for a "Beibehaltungsgenehmigung" through the German courts. You basically have to give a compelling reasons as to why you need to keep your German citizenship AND why you are applying for the American citizenship. The whole thing took about 9 months in my case.

After you have the document just apply for US citizenship like normal.
