Unhappy Failed to file income tax return?

    Hi,
I got my GC in 2005. I went back to india in two weeks to complete my studies after applying for re-entry permit. I had no earnings in 2005. I was totally dependent on my father for all financial support. Hence I did not file a return in 2005.
The pas 5 years I have either been claimed as dependent or I have filed my own claims.

    Two Questions:
    1. In form n400, where is asks if you failed to file a REQUIRED return, what should i tick? Because technically, if you earn less that a certain amount (I was at Zero) you are not required by IRS to file a return.
    2. So how bad is my situation? Can this lead to my citizenship application being denied? Should I cosult a lawyer?

    -thank you in advance!

I think you should be fine but I strongly advise to double-check with a lawyer. When you go to the interview, you can take the tax transcripts for the last 5 years (or copies of the returns where you have been claimed as a dependent) with you.

As I said, please double-check your situation with an immigration lawyer. It can save you a lot of headaches during the process later.
