Passport getting expired in 6 months (Can we travel on India)

Hi

My passport will get expired in 6 months i.e. around May 2012. I am planning to travel to india on december 6th. Is it mandatory that your passport should be valid for 6 or more months for traveling to india?

I want renew my passport in india, how much time will take for complete process? Is there any special documents required other than mentioned in ? do i need any modification for existing visa (because i have valid visa till 1st of july'2012) ?
