Need help in Filing Return for dependent

Hi,

I am new to US came in November 2011. I am on H1 visa and my wife is on H4. I got my SSN, however, my wife is not eligible for it.
While filing the return through turbotax.com (Type: Married and individual) it keep asking me for SSN number of my wife. Can someone please help me what need to be done? I can't apply for my wife SSN as she is on dependent visa.

She has to apply for ITIN. Search for form W7 on IRS website. It is recommended that you file a paper return unless Turbotax can assist in filing W7 as well.

Thank for the respond. I read the instruction on IRS to apply for ITIN. They says it may take like 6 weeks to receive the ITIN number. Last date to file the return is April 15 which is 6 weeks from now. Should I apply for ITIN and wait? If ITIN get delayed I may have to pay the fine .

One of mine friend suggested that file file a paper return and send my wife's W7 with the return. IRS will consider my application as well as they will send ITIN.

Please advise.
