Default Health insurance options for new immigrants

    Hello,

I understand that new immigrants do not qualify for any kind of government-sponsored health care. Besides the above, is there any other restriction for new immigrant to get health insurance?

Are new immigrants free to choose any private insurance? Or it has to be a specific one to new immigrants?

Also, when I asks for a quote online, why is there a 1 year duration limit on policy for new immigrants? My parents likely need a policy for at least 5 years. They are 58 and 60 yr old with no pre-existing condition. They also have health insurance in home country for the past 10 years old. Does it, the fact that they've always had health insurance, offer them any benefit in terms of policy cost here?

    Thank you.

They are free to choose any insurance they like. However, most domestic insurance plans have the requirements that the person must be residing in the U.S. for 6 months or 1 year or 2 years before they can buy it.

Until then, you can buy new immigrants health insurance, available at http://www.insubuy.com/new-immigrant-insurance/

We earlier used to offer several plans up to 5 years, but due to "ObamaCare" law, that is no longer allowed.
