Default Indian citizenship for child born in USA

Hi,

Myself and my wife are Indian citizens here in the US and hold green cards. We are expecting a child soon and the child would be born in the US. Since the child is born in the US he/she would be a US citizen by birth. However we will be returning back to India in next year (for good) and would like to register our child as a citizen of India (for some other reasons) and get him/her an Indian Passport. Is it possible for the child born in USA to hold Indian passport and citizenship? What are the laws and procedures? Does dual citizenship help in this case in any case?

I heard that although the child holds US passport by birth, s/he can have a choice to accept/reject the US citizenship by age 18. But we don't want to wait till s/he grows 18 and want him/her to be Indian citizen by birth only.

I will appreciate if you could help us in this context.

Thanking you,

Regards,
Bhaskar...
