Change of Date and/or Place of Birth in Indian Passport
  • Normally, when a passport has been issued on the basis of documents provided by the applicant, the question of change of date and place of birth should not arise.

  • As soon as the passport is received by the individual, it should be checked and if he/she notices any discrepancy, it should immediately be brought to the attention of the Passport Issuing Authority.

  • Application for change in date/place of birth is entertained only if
    • the entries in the place/date of birth columns have been erroneously made by the original Passport Issuing Authority at the time of issue; OR

    • where the holder of the passport discovers at a later date that the information submitted by him is incorrect.

While completing an online application, in the 'service desired' field, choose option 'Re-issue of Passport'.


Additional Documents
  • One of the following:
    • A court order issued by a judicial officer not below the rank of 1st Class Magistrate in India; (Also called Declaratory Order) or

    • An amendment issued by the Competent Authority. The Competent authority should be the same authority whose certification was submitted at the time of issue of original passport; The Competent Authority in such cases can be Municipal Authorities (for date / place of birth) or Education Board Authority (for date of birth).

    • Original passport showing the correct date/place of birth;

  • If the error is on the part of the Passport Issuing Authority, a new passport will be issued without any fee.
