- PIO Card holder shall not require a visa to visit India.
- No requirement of a student visa for studying in India and employment visa for taking employment
in India. However, PIO cardholders would be required to fulfill other prerequisite conditions and
formalities in connection with their studies/employment as prescribed by concerned authorities from
time to time.
- PIO Card holder will be exempted from the requirement of registration if his/her stay in India does not exceed 180 days.
- In the event of continuous stay in India of the PIO Card holder exceeding 180 days, he/she shall have to get himself/herself registered within 30 days of the expiry of 180 days with the concerned Foreigners Registration Officer at District Headquarters.
- Parity with Non-Resident Indians in respect of facilities available to the latter in economic, financial, educational fields, etc. These facilities will include:-
- acquisition, holding, transfer and disposal of immovable properties in India except of agricultural/plantation properties;
- open rupee bank accounts in India, lend in rupees to Indian residents, make investments in India;
- admission of children in educational institutions in India under the general category quota for NRIs - including medical / engineering college, IITs, IIMs etc.
- various housing schemes of Life Insurance Corporation of India, State Governments and other Government agencies;
- All future benefits that would be extended to NRIs would also be available to the PIO Card holders.
- Separate counters for immigration would be provided to PIO card holders at all International Airports in India.
However, if there are ten counters for the general public and if there is one counter for the PIO card holder, many times
the general line moves much faster than the PIO line if there happen to be several PIO card holders in line.
- No parity with resident Indians or NRIs regarding any political rights.
- It does not give voting rights to the holders of the Card.
- The right to buy property would not be valid for Jammu & Kashmir.
- Prior permission of the Government of India is required for undertaking mountaineering
expeditions, missionary activities, research work and visit to the restricted/protected area.
