OCI Card

This was my experience getting an OCI card for my newborn from the New York mission:

24th September 2022: Application sent via FedEx.
28th September 2022: Application received and is “Under Process” at VFS New York
30th September 2022: Application has been “Processed” at VFS India Consular application centre and is “In Transit” to the Indian Embassy.

3rd October 2022: Your application has reached the Embassy/Consulate and is currently under review process

25th October 2022: OCI number generated, doc printing status as processed
27th October 2022: Document dispatched via FedEx
28th October 2022: OCI Card received.

Overall, a smooth and fast process. There was initial confusion around fingerprints & signature requirements but the immihelp forums were helpful!

Below is my experience for new OCI at Chicago Mission:

Status on VFS site at 3:45pm:
Your document (s) is dispatched using the return label purchased or sent by you. If using VFS courier, please check for email from "[email protected]" for details.If you have used your prepaid label then track the status via the website of the concerned service provider.Note: Information is printed on the documents as what you have filled while completing the online Form on the Government Portal. If you have made mistakes while filling up the Govt. form then VFS Indian Consular application Centres wont be in a position to assist. To get the corrections done, you should contact the Embassy of India or its Consulate directly based on your Consular Jurisdiction. Sorry, this not an “experience” post per se. My OCI application has been under process since Oct. 4. I have upcoming travel in mid-November. Looking at previous timelines of folks, I was hoping my application would have been processed and the card would have printed by now.

Are there people who applied late September/early October who are also waiting for their OCI to be processed?

I am impressed with the speed of processing. The entire process completed in less than a month. Kudos to Government of India!

Do we need to send US passport at any point for OCI process?

Sept 6 - completed online application, made payment and sent the package to VFS
Sept 7 - package delivered
Sept 8 - VFS acknowledged
Sept 9 - processed at VFS, in transit to consulate
Sept 10- consulate acknowledged, tracking information appeared on government website.
Oct 3 - OCI number generated, document printing status processed.
Oct 6 - dispatched from New Delhi
Oct 7- Received at SF consulate
Oct 7- received email from fedex with tracking information.
