  • Returning to US as a 10 years Green card holder after 10 months away

I have a 10-year Green Card. I’ve been outside the U.S. for about 10 months due to very serious reasons. There was a war in my home country, and I had to stay to take care of my elderly grandmother. For several months, there were no flights back to the U.S., and I also lost friends in this war. I truly felt I needed to be with my family and support them.

I’m now returning through Newark Airport.
I have a new remote job contract with my U.S. address on it.
I also have a home insurance policy with my husband and my name on it.
We don’t have a lease because we live under my mother-in-law’s lease, but she gave me a signed letter with her ID confirming that we live with her.

What should I expect when I arrive back in the U.S.?
I’m a bit worried, even though I know that being away for less than 12 months should be okay. I just can’t wait to get home, but I’d love to hear what the process is like these days.

    Thank you all! 🙏

    Hi,
You are perfectly good to reenter to USA as you are outside of the country less than 12 months. Your GC card is still valid to reenter to the USA. At the port of entry, they may ask questions about your long stay in the abroad. Please say the truth answer which will secure you for any unnecessary second inspection. I hope the reasons for staying our side of country is strong valid to convey to the officer.
    All the best.
    Thanks
