Indian Divorce procedure in US

I would like to know what the safest procedure is to enable a divorce/dissolution of marriage procedure in the US for a couple that was married in India but never registered as a married couple in the US. I am on a H1-B VISA and she is on a dependant (H4) status. Does the Indian Consulate in the US handle divorce cases for getting the divorce deed or do I have to get it from an Indian court from India (which sounds like a pain). At what stage will my spouse be out of status?
