What is the legal USD amount we can carry to India

I am doing my masters in USA. I am planning to visit my parents and would like to carry some USD (Dollars) to back home in India. Can any one let me know what is the legal USD amount we carry to India.

Legally you can carry $10,000 in cash. But I would strongly suggest registering on www.onlinesbi.com/gls and doing an ACH transfer to your NRE bank account in India. Then once you are in India you can debit as much rupees as you want from your bank there.
