Max Cash (dollars) that can be carried to India?

Hi,

I am in US on a B1 visa.
I do not have SSN so I am not able to transfer my money to India using any website.
I plan to carry the cash (in Dollars) to India with me.
I want to know how much cash can be carried to India without any custom hassles.
I probably would come back to US next year so I want to carry the cash (in dollars) back to US.
Please let me know the allowable limit of Cash (in dollars) that can be carried in and out of USA.
I would probably be carrying more than $3000.

You can carry $5000 in cash and another $5000 in travellers cheques.

But is this $5000 cash limit for entering in US or entering in India?

I am planning to bring cash to India but also plan to carry back the same amount to US in my next visit.

You can carry the same amount back to the US. Don't go to declare the amount. Just keep it in a safety pouch in your luggage. $5000 is a small amount. When you come back, just have enough cash for the first 3 months rent + food.
