  • pay us taxes after leaving the us?

    Hi,

I heard about a new law saying that green card holders leaving the US permanently have to pay US taxes for ten years, after they left the US.
Can anyone tell me, if this is true?

    Huh?

    Ten years? Which ten years?

You pay taxes for the year in which you have income in the United States.

You file your tax returns for the year in which you have any income in United States.

If you continue to have investments in the country and have an income, then you will need to file your tax returns and as calculated, pay required taxes.
If you don't return back to the country in two years, your green card is anyway gone, so your witholding will be at the required non-resident percentage.

    That's it.

    Take care.
