Pre-trial intervention is typically designed to avoid prosecution of non-violent, non-serious offenders to both ease the burden of trials faced by courts and to avoid bestowing a criminal record on the offender. Post conviction relief is typically filed by a defendant once their appeal has been denied by an appellate court.
