  • Permanent Residency (Green Card) application for Sister

    Hello,

I am a US citizen and would like to file a Permanent Residency (Green Card) application for my sister. Appreciate if you could provide inputs on the following questions:

    1) Is it OK to file the I-130 application on my own or should it be done via a lawyer?

    2) What documents need to be submitted with the application?

    3) Typically how long does the processingt take?

    Tx,
    Mbhatia.

    1. You don't need an attorney to complete and file a 2-page I-130. It's probably the simplest of all immigration procedures, unless you have $2,000+ to give an attorney to make him feel important.
    2. You need to submit $420 fee, proof of your U.S. citizenship, proof of your sibling relationship.
    3. The process to get a sibling to the U.S. takes 12 to 23 years, depending on her country.
