You are out of status if you are not getting paid! You have bigger problems than fileing for GC. You should be worried about being in US illegally without job meeting your LCA.

Either find a real job or return to your home country before you have long term problems.

First you need to make sure your status in the country is legal and valid and that your work permit requirements like H1B or EAD are valid too.

Secondly, your "bench" or out of project issues have nothing to do with filing for your GC. The application is for Permanent Residency and not tied directly to your current local job.

You may not even work with this employer but still file for employment based GC through the same company.

Got it? You should not stop your GC process at all.
