  • US Passport

I have a US born daughter (born 3 weeks ago). I have a copy of birth certificate (issued by local county office). For applying for US passport for my child do I need child's Social Security Number (SSN)? In the US passport application it is mentioned that IRS may impose a fine if not provided? Does anyone know if there is a problem for applying for passport with providing SSN.

PS: I have applied for SSN through hospital but it has not come yet and I need to return to India. That is the reason why I simply cannot keep on waiting for US SSA office to take their own time to issue SSN.

You will also need to expedite the passport after you get the number.(The passport office is experiencing huge delays) SSN is not necessary for passport the birth certificate is. After you have the passport you will also need a visa for India as well. You might want to visit your local passport office for assistance in the matter.

You should plan for at least 8-10 weeks after the birth of the baby before you can travel back. and do consult your doctor about travel, having such a small baby in small enclosed space of the plane is not healthy.

    Edit:

Reading the FAQs further the SSN requirement by IRS seesm important. I know that it is possible to call SSN office and obtain the number after identifying yourself

Already checked with your post office?

Just wanted to share my thoughts and suggestions, though am not in need to travel soon:
We received the SSN card for our US born baby 6-7 weeks after her birth.
(Denver area). Check with your local post office that processes passport applications (not all POs do), I would think they will be able to clarify whether you can apply without SSN.
And, my baby's pediatrician clarified to us that baby can travel by air even when they are just 3-4 weeks old. Nothing to be concerned. Some babies might have ear problems (pressure related). Being parents of a baby, I am sure you would have already enquired with your pediatrician.

        My case

        1. My daughter was born on April 26th
        2. Applied for US passport on May 10th with out SSN (Just put zeros in
        SSN field) with expedited process.
*Go to the specific passport agency where they execute the photograph for 10 dollars otherwise its difficult to get the photos done for infants.

        3. Received passport on 17th June.

(* In the application I mentioned that I need the passport by 15th of June.
I am not sure but this may be the reason for delay. It took 5 weeks
even though they said only 3-4 weeks for expedited prcoess)

        Hope this helps
