indian passport renewal

We have been here for over seven years.
My wife left for india last week and has just realised that her passport will need renewal in a month's time. Please would let us know the procedure to renew indian passports for NRIs. The indian locals can show their bank statements etc for their stay in india for previous years but NRIs can't do that. What procedure should NRI follow to renew their passport in india and how long would that take ?

Did she actually visit the local office and talked to someone there explaining her situation. although the website

http://passport.nic.in/

does not mention anything about NRI's I am sure something is in place.
