  • PIO Card renewal/endorsement procedure

    1. Is it must to have endorsement on the PIO card when renewing an expired passport ? Can we travel with both old and new passports without the PIO Card being updated ?

    2. does anyone know the procedure for updating PIO card due to passport expiry ? (there is nothing mentioned on the consulate website - SF)

My son is leaving on May 31st to India and will be getting his new passport only by the 1st week of May. Can we just drop in to the consulate and get the PIO card renewal or endorsement in a day or two ?

Please help if you have any information related to this

New passport should be endorsed with your PIO card

You can and should get the new passport endorsed with the original PIO card information. You use the same application form and there's no fee for the endorsement, except for the expenses you may bear for shipping etc.

This is a para from the application form for PIO which will be helpful to you:
"VALIDITY: A PIO Card shall be valid for a period of fifteen years from the date of issue subject to the validity
of the passport of the applicant. In other words, the PIO card shall be valid only if the passport held by the
individual is valid on a particular date. After issuance of the PIO card, if the holder is issued a new passport,
he should get his new passport number endorsed on the PIO card. There is no fee for this service."
