Expired tourist e-visa while in India

Hi all,
My wife is visiting India on a tourist e-visa that allows 30 days. During the tail end of her trip, she came down with covid requiring hospitalization. While she was recovering, her visa expired. What can she do to return to USA in the quickest possible way. She is in Chennai.

She will have to pay a penalty/fee for overstaying the visa and get an "Exit Permit". I think it can be done in the airport at the time if departure, but check with local sources.

I am in the same boat. Got the exit permit approved after 2 months. Have to pay Rs 27200as fine. 20k penalty and 7200 fees. Still not sure what the fees are for ????????. I have a regular 10 years visa
