  • insurance for recent immigrants

I have been reading your postings at immihelp. My parents will be immigrating to the US this month. I am resigned to continuing to buy visitor insurance for them since it doesn't look like they will be covered by medicare/medicate etc, inspite of being permanent residents.

What plan would you recommend ? My father is 75 with a host of pre-existing conditions, my mother is 70+ and in the same boat. Would I still be liable for a lot of the expense even after purchasing the insurance ?

I am wondering if immigrating to the US is such a good idea afterall.

    thanks

As bad as it may sound, immigrating to the USA with pre-existing conditions is not at all a good idea.
    I suggest you read
https://www.insubuy.com/new-immigrant-insurance/-plans/ It will give very good guidance regarding the position of new immigrants regarding insurance.
In short, no company will cover pre-existing conditions for them and you would be on your own if something related to pre-existing condition occurs.
You may also want to read https://www.insubuy.com/visitor-medi...ng-conditions/ that describes pre-existing conditions in very detail.
Having said that, if you would like to purchase $100,000 comprehensive insurance, WorldMed would be best. It is available at
https://www.insubuy.com/worldmed-insurance/ For $50,000, Protection America would be best, available at https://www.insubuy.com/patriot-america-insurance/
I hope this answers your questions.

Thanks for your prompt response. I will look into the links you provided, I would like to atleast buy temporary insurance till I have everything sorted out.

I did hear that in CA, anyone above 65 (including recent immigrants) can make use of Medi-CAL. Is this correct, do other states have a similar program ?

I have looked into Medi-CAL. It is not as simple as it sounds. Before person being eligible for any such programs, they will take your assets also into account. Most people will not qualify.
Similar rules exists in other states also.
When sponsoring them, you are certifying in Form I-864 that they will not be any burden on government and you will take care of them yourself.
