Apply for Marketplace Insurance (a.k.a Obamacare) without SSN (for parents in AOS)

Hello - does any one know if SSN (social security number) is a must in applying for Marketplace Insurance? I have heard mixed messages - some say you must have it and others say you can leave it blank. Is there anyone out there who has had success applying for Marketplace Insurance without SSN, or know the definitive answer? I would greatly appreciate any input.
