Must I travel on the same date as what I put in Schengen visa application?

I'm intending to visit Amsterdam during mid July. From what I found online, I can apply at the earliest 3 months before my trip date, which means I need to wait till mid April to apply.
Would it be possible if I put travel date of mid June, apply now and travel in July instead?
