  • Is 6-month validity of passport rule applicable for greencards?

I am a US Greencard holder. I also hold a valid US reentry permit. I am making a 3 weeks long to India in December. When I depart from India to the US, my Indian passport will have a little over 4 months' validity. For non-Immigrant visa holders traveling to the US, I am told, the passport should have at least 6 months validity.

I checked with Emirates and they said the rule is not applicable for permanent residents and that, technically, I should be able to travel even without a passport. BUT, the agent I talked to implied that some rogue passport control officers in India are known to create problem and hence I should confirm with the Indian immigration.

Could some of you share your experiences?

    Thanks!

No. What they said is right -- if you have a green card you don't need a passport at all to enter the US. Furthermore, the Re-entry Permit is a travel document equivalent to a passport for international travel. But that doesn't mean you won't have trouble with airline staff and/or other countries' border control.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.
