  • Transit denied for student with valid F1 visa

    Hi, I need urgent help

My husband flight from Brazil via USA to Mexico was just cancelled by American Airlines. He was told by American Airlines that although he has a valid student F1 visa he cannot transit through the USA because his purpose of entering the US will be transit and not studying. That's ridiculous in general, and especially in his case as his PhD research in the US is aobut comparing Brazil and Mexico.

As kind of a solution, they cancelled the US-Mexico leg of his trip and then let him on the Brazil-US flight.

I can't find anything about this new policy in forums, or on Gov US websites where I could only find that you *can* transit through the US with a valid student visa - which to me is common sense.

Is this really a new policy? Or should we sue American Airlines?

    Thanks for your help

I am surprised they were so strict about it, but their position was entirely defensible
