  • Taxes after leaving the country

    Hello all,

I was in the US until last year on a J1 visa. My last paycheque was received in November 2016 and I left the country that same month. I filed my taxes by myself this year, I even got a refund. My question to you is, do I have to file anything next year even if I didn't work in the US at all this year? What if I still have a chequing account in the US?

Thank you, all! I will appreciate any help.

    Victor

The short answer is: probably not, assuming you were a J-1 "student" for less than 5 calendar years, or a J-1 "teacher or trainee" for less than 2 years; and never violated your visa status. You probably do, if you were a J-1 "teacher or trainee" for more than 2 years, or were a "student" for more than 5 years, or if you ever worked without authorization. Even if you do have to file something, you may not be liable for any taxes
