I don't know the status of my husband

I am married to an Indian citizen and have a son who's an American citizen by birth. I went on a H4 and my husband is on a H1B. However he was emotionally abusive and sent me back home with my son and it has been two years since he contacted my son or me and hasn't supported us financially. Since my husband refuses to return to India and I want a smooth divorce, I have been advised by lawyers to not file any aggressive cases against my husband and in laws.
This October 2018, he will be completing 6 years on H1B. However I don't know if he has initialized green card or not. How can I find out his status in USA? He refuses to come to India and doesn't want to face me. Please someone advice me on what to do. Is there a way for me to find out his status in USA?

I’d talk with a case worker with the child protection services or social services in his state. They will advise you on the best action and proper process.
