Change Visa status from L1B to TN with same employer

Hi,

I am a Canadian Citizen and working with a IT company since Jan/2016 on L1B visa. My current L1B visa is expiring on Jan/2019.
My employer doesn?t want me to extend the L1B visa. They want me to go on TN Visa. They will provide me the job offer for next 3 years.

What should be the process of getting TN visa to work for the same employer with same role/responsibility?

Should I go to US port of entry and ask for change of status from L1B to TN? Any risk due to working on same employer ?
