Not sure if I understood your question correctly.

An L2 (dependent) need to prove that the L1 (primary) is staying in USA with valid status.

So a copy of an approved 129 or 797 is required to be present (not the original one).

I've seen people showing latest payslips/bank statements to prove that their spouse's expired I797 is under renewal - not sure what happened to them.
