Kids US passport submitted for renewal. Will OCI card(booklet) still work ?

We got the OCI card back in 2014. My kid (12 years old) passport is expiring in September and i submitted forms for renewal (new passport) of his US passport today. He did have the U visa stamp on his passport and it mentioned lifelong. I did read at https://boi.gov.in/content/visa-requirement that "Passengers who are carrying old cancelled passports having Life Long Indian "U" Visa Sticker affixed on it along with new passport are allowed entry into India." But, when i had called coxandking earlier i was told that we have to reissue my kid's OCI card. We are travelling end of May to India for a month. I want to check if anyone has faced a similar situation and what worked for you ? Did you apply for a tourist visa just for your kid or did you travel with the old passport and the oci booklet ? I am a little nervous because the passport will come somewhere within 4-6 weeks and will only have 2 weeks at the most to do anything else.
