  • FAB in UAE for expats vs locals and how do you actually check balance easily?

Hi all, I was going through some posts here about travel to Dubai and working abroad and thought I’d ask something that’s been bothering me during my stay.

I’ve been in the UAE for a while on a work setup and ended up with a FAB account linked to a Ratibi card. From what I’ve seen, things seem smoother for locals, while as an expat it feels a bit limited, especially when it comes to basic things like tracking money properly. I’m not sure if that’s just my experience or how the system is set up.

The main issue is checking the balance. I don’t have full access like a normal account holder, and the usual methods like SMS are inconsistent. When you’re moving around or planning travel, not knowing your exact available balance becomes a real problem.

So I wanted to ask if others here who have lived or traveled in the UAE found FAB better suited for locals than expats in real use, and more importantly, what is the most reliable way to check the actual balance on a Ratibi or FAB account without second guessing it.

FAB accounts linked to Ratibi cards often have more limitations for expats than locals. The most reliable ways to check your balance are using the FAB mobile app, checking at an ATM with your Ratibi card, or finding guidance and support word online through FAB customer service.

I wanted to ask about the differences in services or benefits when using FAB (First Abu Dhabi Bank) as an expat vs a local—are there any major limitations or perks to be aware of?

Also, what’s the easiest and most reliable way to check your account balance (mobile app, SMS, ATM, etc.)?

By the way, while reading about how modern systems are becoming more automated, I came across an article on autonomous delivery drones and how they work and why it matters, which gives an interesting look at how technology is evolving.

You’re not imagining it. FAB salary setups like Ratibi do feel more limited compared to regular local banking accounts. A lot of expats in Dubai get these cards through employers because they’re simple for payroll processing, but the downside is you don’t always get the same features or detailed transaction tracking that locals with full accounts usually have.

The balance issue is probably the most common complaint. SMS alerts can arrive late or not at all, and sometimes the app shows a delay after salary credits or failed transactions. I had a coworker in Abu Dhabi who used to check his balance three different ways because he stopped trusting the notifications completely after a few payment reversals confused him.

From what I’ve seen, ATM inquiry is still the most dependable option when you really need to know the exact available amount. The app is fine for quick checks, but if something looks odd, like a pending card payment or delayed transfer, the ATM usually reflects the correct balance sooner.

So overall, FAB works well enough for receiving salary, but many expats eventually notice the limitations once they start relying on it for travel, online payments, and regular spending.
