Hi,
I have a J-1 Student VISA that will expire in June 2014 (started in Sept. 2013) but I will not be able to finish the whole program and will go back to my country after fall semester. The problem is that I booked a flight on January 17th and realized too late that if I shorten my Visa to end after Fall semester I have to leave the US before January 12th (30 days after the semester ends). I would prefer not to re-book my flight since it will cost a lot of money. I haven't shortened my VISA yet and I'm enrolled in courses for the next semester so there are a few options available.
Option 1. Drop my classes on the first day of the semester and get my Visa terminated and be told to leave the US immediately. Semester starts on January 6th so that gives me approximately 10 days to leave the country. Is that considered immediately and will the terminated VISA cause me any problems in the future?
Option 2. Shorten my VISA and go to Mexico over the holidays and apply for a visitor VISA before returning to the US. Don't know if this is even possible.
Option 3. Stay in classes the first week and come up with an excuse to why I need to terminate my VISA just before the 17th.
Option 4. Shorten my VISA and face the consequences for a 5-day overstay.
Any other options I haven't considered?
Thanks in advance.
