J1 Visa if married to a US Citizen

Hello there,

I was wondering whether it is possible to obtain a J1 Intern visa if one is married to an American citizen (both currently living outside the USA)?
They'd enter the USA together.
Also, what kind of proof of intent to return would be accepted?

Would it be better not to be married on arrival?

Be careful with that one. My wife was subjected to 212(e) - home country residency requirement as a result of use of government funding in the J1 program. Participation in a program that subjects an applicant to that requirement will make it more difficult if he/she seeks a green card/H1-B/few other visas in the future. Of course waivers might be obtainable and not all programs are subject to this, but careful consideration should be taken.
