Need urgent help please!! Try to extend stay in the US?

Hello everyone,,
Right now I'm doing my internship with a J1-Visa. After my internship I will do my study abroad in the US again. My partner university submitted a new DS2019 for me and told me that I need to apply for J1-Visa again. Is it possible that I can extend my stay within the US without going back to my home country and apply for a new J1-Visa? I heard that I could Balance Credit get a new I-94 through reentering US from Canada e.g. which extend my stay in the US. • Expiration date of visa stamp: End of March
• Current DS2019 program end date: End of March
• Entered US Beginning of September
• Status of current DS2019: Intern

• New DS2019 program start date: End of March
• New DS2019 program end date: End of September
• Status of new DS2019: non-degree student

The whole situation is really confusing me...I would be very glad about further information or any help from someone who shared the same situation.
