  • J1 visa/ ties to your country of origin

    Hi there!

I'm interested in working as a teacher in the US on a J1 visa, however I've read that you need to demonstrate strong ties to your home country. The thing with me is that I haven't lived there in 20 years. Like many expat teachers, I move around a lot, usually not staying longer than 2-3 years in one place. Any advice on how to not get rejected?

You can change your visa status if your program doesn`t involve a return and not being able to enter the US for 2 years. You can also change it to an F1 study visa. To do this you`ll need to prove that you have enough money (in a bank account) to study, or you must have a guarantor in the U.S. The amount depends on the cost of tuition. If your visa is "two years rule doesn`t apply", you can extend your stay in the US on a J-1 visa. There`re known cases of visas being valid for up to 4-7 years. Also on career prospects, I advise you to visit this site. It's just in case you're considering more than just the states.
