Hi, I am working as a research scholar on a J1 visa and subject to a 2-year home residency requirement and 24-month repeat participation bar. My spouse is also a post-doc on J1. I am wondering 10.0.0.0.1 192.168.1.254 whether I can change my J1 visa to J2 if my sponsor decides not to sponsor me next year. Thanks in advance!

Yes, you can do a Change of Status inside the US. See 2 USCIS-PM D.5(C). You can also get a J2 visa abroad.
This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.

You cannot change to another nonimmigrant ulta beauty gift card balance status (including J-2) within the U.S. unlessLast edited by jos088brush; 03-25-2026, 12:08 AM.

Yes, you can generally switch from J-1 to J-2 as a dependent if your spouse is maintaining valid J-1 status, but it depends on your specific situation and sponsor conditions.
Since you mentioned the 2-year home residency requirement, that restriction may still apply, so it’s important to check whether it affects your change of status.
Best step is to confirm with your sponsor or an immigration advisor before your current support ends.
