  • F1 (OPT) to J2 visa - Change of status

    Hi all,

I am currently on OPT student visa. My OPT is gonna expire very soon. want to apply for J2 as dependent on my husband's J1visa(He is doing MD residency in USA). I have few questions regarding this:

    0. My biggest question is- I got married in India. My last name on marriage certificate(my husband's last name is printed) is different from my passport name (my original last name is printed in passport and on my F1 visa). So, if I apply for change of visa status to J2, are they going to raise any objections about this? if yes, what should I do to fix it?

    1. what are the forms I need to submit? Is form I-539 is enough or do I need to send any other forms?
    2. can I send the required documents to nearest consulate by post or do I need to attend in person?
    3. What kind of fee I need to pay apart from fee for I-539?
    4. How many days typically it takes to process J2 visa?

I would really appreciate your help ASAP
    thanks

The F-1 visa applies to students who are interested in obtaining a full-time degree or attending an academic program at a school, college, or university approved by the U.S. Government in compliance with the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). The F-1 visa is valid until the student's course of study is completed. An F-1 visa also permits students to work on campus and, in some cases, off campus.
