earliest time to apply for ssn

Hello ,

I was on H4 visa. My H1b got approved for the 2013 quota and the start date begins on November 1st, 2012. I would like to know if I can apply my SSN before the start date so that i can have it ready by Nov 1st and start working from Nov 1st itself.

Visit a nearby SSA office and find out. SSN is not required for working. It is only necessary that you have applied for it in order to receive pay.
