Question on Passport renewal and change of maiden name as visa is nearing expiry.

Hi Immihelp and all,

I have a few questions that I am unable to find answers to. Kindly help.

I am an Indian citizen, currently on H1B which expires December 2013.
A new employer is going to file my transfer,but the process has not began yet from their side (they give many reasons,but promise that they will take care of it).
Issue 1 : My passport expires January 2014.
Issue 2: My passport still has my maiden name.I will have a baby in October 2013.
I would like to straighten up my passport renewal and change of maiden name before the baby is born,to have proper records for the child.

But I am totally confused now.

Question: Is it ok to renew passport and and change my maiden name when I am almost nearing an expected visa transfer?
Question: Will the process be affected if my passport is in the process of going through all these changes and meanwhile, H1B transfer process gets initiated?

Please provide your valuable advice/suggestions.
