L2 to H4

Hi,

I am living in USA on L1 -B in Company A. Company B applied for H1-B and it got Approved. My Visa status will be changed to H1 B from Oct 1st, 2013. But my wife and 2 year kid were still on L2

1. How to convert their L2 status to H4?
2. Do I need to change their status before Oct 1st?

1. By filing i-539.
2. Yes with H4 effective from 01-Oct
