Credit history in US?

Hey guys,
would be landing in US in June, heard that it is a viscious circle for getting a credit card as one does not have any credit history initially. How much time on an average does it take to buy a credit card?

Persons on L or H visa should not have difficulty in getting a credit card. In the initial period, person can use bank debit card to do electronic transactions.

If for any history reasons, a person has difficulty in getting a credit card, s/he has an option of getting a secured credit card which involves depositing say $ 2000 with a bank to get credit of $ 1000 to build credit history and switch over to market available credit cards once reasonable credit history is developed.

1. You can apply for a secured credit card in the 1st month it self
or
2. If you have more than one account (checking+saving) accounts in the same bank for more than one month with decent bals. That banks would be ready to give the credit cards!! I guess
