H4 minor extension, how long can he stay with receipt

I applied my son's H4 extension in July end and got receipt of it, but till now didn't get any approval of extension, his current H4 expired in mid September.Till what date he can stay on the extension receipt?

Indefinitely, as long as the extension of status is pending.
