L1 to H1 Conversion.

I am currently in the US working on L1; seeking other jobs, which needs conversion to H1B.

1/ Can I do this without going to India?
2/ Can I start working on the new H1 after getting the INS receipt
- or do I need to wait until I receipt the H1 papers?
- or do I need to wait until I get a visa stamped on my passport?

Please advice.

Ok,
1. You can apply for H1 from US and you can start work from without going to India. While applying for the H1 , You have to specify the option 2, L1 to H1 transfer application.
2. Your H1 2007 will be effective only from Oct 2006, so You will have to wait till the time.
3. If you do want to have a trip to India, then obvious you need stamping or otherwise working here, it's not a problem.
