H1 expiring who pays for flights home?

My H1b is expiring oct 2007, my current employer has stated they will support me and my family until the expiration date. Then we will have to leave the US.
If we dont have enough money to ship our belongings back home to UK or to fly home, is the employer responsible for these costs, bearing in mind that we are not supposed to become a burdon to the US economy, thanks for any advice
