H4 Visa To H1 Visa

Hi,
Can anyone tell me within how many days we hv to apply for SSN when we get the documents in our hand?
I am currently on H4 visa and got H1 approved recently.Still not applied for SSN.What happens if H1 visa holder on whom i am dependent returns back to India?
If i won't get job immediately after getting SSN do i need to produce pay steps for that period of time?
Please clarify my doubts...

If your h1b is approved then you do not need to move back with your spouse. Once you are on H1, you are continuously supposed to get paystubs.
