Question on H1B and Travel

I have a valid I-797 and a valid H1B visa stamped on my passport. My H1B and I-797 are due to expire on Dec 7 2007. Can I travel outside the U. S. and return before Dec 7 for example returning back to the U. S. on Nov 27? One of my friends told me that I cannot travel within 90 days of my visa expiry date.

I will be applying for my H1 extension in September.
