J1 to B1 before H1B stamping-Expertise of Mr.Subramanya

Hi everyone.

I am on J1, expiring on July 15, 2007. And H1B 2008 has been approved. I wish to continue my legal stay in the US using B1 visa.

Should I apply for B1 with the USCIS or the Chennai Consulate in India?

And will the B1 visa be issued before July this year?

Please advise me on this matter.

---- If you wish to continue your stay in the US, you can apply for change of status from J1 to B1 and continue staying. there is no need to go to Chennai

And will the B1 visa be issued before July this year?

---- Yes, it is possible to have the B1 before July. But be aware of the start date, if it comes before July 15, then your status changes from J1 to B1 right away, unless the start date mentioned on your Visa is different
